Can you get pregnant from precum?

What is precum, exactly?

Precum, or pre-ejaculatory fluid, is a small amount of clear fluid that the penis releases during sexual arousal, before ejaculation happens. It comes from the Cowper's glands and the Glands of Littre, which sit along the urethra.

Its main jobs are practical: it neutralises the acidity in the urethra (urine is acidic, which is hostile to sperm) and provides some lubrication during sex. You might not even notice it happening, as only a small amount is typically produced.

The key thing to understand is that precum itself does not originate from the same glands that produce semen. In that sense, precum isn't made to carry sperm. But whether it does carry sperm is a different question.

Does precum contain sperm?

This is where it gets more nuanced. Technically, precum does not produce sperm on its own. But sperm can find its way into the fluid.

Research published in Human Fertility examined 40 pre-ejaculatory fluid samples from 27 men. The findings showed that 41% of men produced pre-ejaculatory samples that contained sperm, and in 37% of cases, a meaningful proportion of that sperm was motile (capable of movement and fertilisation).¹

A more recent pilot study noted that sperm levels in pre-ejaculate were generally low compared to full ejaculation, but still present in some samples at concentrations that could pose a pregnancy risk.²

The research suggests this varies between individuals. Some men consistently have sperm in their pre-ejaculatory fluid; others do not. There is currently no way to know which category someone falls into without laboratory testing.


Is it possible to get pregnant from precum?

Yes, it is possible, though the overall risk from a single instance is relatively low. Two things need to align for pregnancy to occur from precum:

  • Sperm must be present in the fluid

  • You need to be in or near your fertile window at the time

If both of these are true, fertilisation becomes more plausible.

How your cycle affects the risk

Pregnancy can only happen if sperm reaches an egg. According to the NHS, ovulation typically occurs around 10 to 16 days before the next period starts. Sperm can survive inside the fallopian tubes for up to 7 days after sex. This means your fertile window extends back further than ovulation itself.³

If you had unprotected sex in the days before ovulation, whether from full ejaculation or pre-ejaculate contact, any sperm present could still be viable by the time the egg is released.

What about 3 days before ovulation?

Yes, this is still within your fertile window. Sperm from pre-ejaculation can survive for several days, so if some enters your vagina three days before ovulation, it could still be there to fertilise the egg once it's released. The risk is lower than with full ejaculation, but it's not zero.

Ways to prevent getting pregnant from precum:

The pull-out method does not reliably prevent exposure to precum, since the fluid is released before ejaculation occurs. If avoiding pregnancy is the goal, more effective options are available.

Condoms are the most practical barrier method. The NHS reports they are around 82% effective with typical use and over 98% effective with perfect use. Crucially, they prevent pre-ejaculate from entering the vagina entirely when worn from the start of sexual contact.

Hormonal contraception (the pill, patch, injection, or implant) removes the risk posed by pre-ejaculate altogether by preventing ovulation or fertilisation. The NHS rates several of these methods at over 99% effectiveness with perfect use.

For couples who are actually trying to conceive

Sperm from any form of ejaculation, including traces in pre-ejaculate, can survive for several days in the reproductive tract. The most fertile days are in the run-up to ovulation and on the day itself.

According to the NHS, having sex every 2 to 3 days throughout your cycle makes pregnancy likely within a year for those 39 or under, as this keeps sperm consistently present without the pressure of pinpointing ovulation to the exact day.
